Job Description

Position Summary

The American Academy in Rome (AAR), a leading overseas center for independent studies and advanced research in the arts and humanities, seeks an experienced Director of Communications to develop, lead and integrate its global communications strategy. The Director will advance the Academy’s visibility, deepen engagement with diverse stakeholders, and support institutional goals through compelling, consistent, and mission-aligned storytelling across platforms and geographies.

Based in New York with frequent collaboration with Rome-based colleagues, the Director will oversee all aspects of internal and external communications, brand stewardship, media relations, and digital engagement globally and specifically in Europe and North America. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and skilled communicator with a passion for the arts, culture, and academic inquiry – someone who can translate the Academy’s legacy and impact into narratives that resonate worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communications

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive, integrated multi-year communications strategy that amplifies AAR’s mission, programs, research and thought leadership across the arts and humanities (in close collaboration with Program teams).
  • Shape messaging to support institutional priorities including fundraising (in close collaboration with the Director of Advancement), alumni engagement, fellowship recruitment, public programming, and board relations.

Content Development & Brand Stewardship

  • Oversee the creation of high-quality content—editorial, visual, video—that reflects the voice and values of AAR and reinforces its reputation for excellence and intellectual rigor.
  • Ensure brand consistency across all touchpoints, including publications, digital channels, press, events, and physical spaces.
  • Work closely with leadership and fellows to identify and elevate stories of impact from both Rome and New York.

Media & Public Relations

  • Cultivate and manage relationships with journalists, critics, and media outlets covering art, architecture, music, literature, academia, culture, and philanthropy.
  • Proactively secure earned media opportunities, op-eds, features, and interviews to enhance visibility and support institutional campaigns.
  • Draft press releases, media kits, talking points, and executive communications.

Digital Engagement & Analytics

  • Direct strategy and content for AAR’s website, social media channels, newsletters, and digital campaigns, ensuring regular engagement and audience growth.
  • Leverage data and analytics to track performance, assess ROI, and refine communications tactics accordingly.

Internal & Cross-Departmental Communications

  • Serve as a trusted communications partner to the President, Director, Development, Programs, and Board Relations.
  • Align internal messaging across departments and support staff communications in both Rome and New York.
  • Help design and distribute institutional reports, strategic updates, and internal newsletters.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in communications, media, and public relations.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and executing multi-channel communications strategies.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills; ability to convey complex ideas with clarity and impact.
  • Experience managing high-level media relations and navigating fast-moving news cycles.
  • Proficiency with digital platforms (e.g., CMS, social media tools, email marketing, analytics).
  • Global outlook and cultural fluency; experience working across geographies and with international teams.
  • Passion for the arts, humanities, and cross-disciplinary inquiry; familiarity with AAR’s mission a strong plus.
  • Fluency in Italian is desired.

Benefits

  • Health Coverage: Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life and Disability Insurance: Employer-paid life insurance, as well as long-term and short-term disability coverage
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA): Pre-tax options for healthcare and dependent care expenses
  • Telemedicine Services: Convenient access to virtual care
  • Retirement Plan: A 403(b) retirement plan with generous employer match
  • Paid Time Off: Generous paid time off, including vacation, holidays, and sick leave
  • Additional Voluntary Benefits: A variety of optional benefits to meet individual needs
  • Attendance: We value a healthy work-life balance and currently offer a work schedule of four days in-office and one day of remote work.
